For bellwork today I asked students to think about a quote by New Mexico artist Georgia O’Keeffe:
Nobody sees a flower really; it is so small. We haven’t time, and to see takes time – like to have a friend takes time.
I’m not much of a painter; I’m not very good at it and always paint everything like an impressionist sketch, whether I intend to or not. This is likely, as much as anything, because I’ve only taken one class on painting, and it mostly consisted of getting underpaintings down fast. I’ve never been quite sure what to do after that. But I’ve only taken that one class because, well, I don’t care all that much. Nevertheless, I make resolutions to finally paint on a regular basis the way other people resolve to work out daily or eat less cake. Bucause for some reason that’s not entirely clear to me, it seems like the right thing to do.
