Last week I ran into a priest at a little Russian coffee shop, who mentioned that some folks sing “Christ is risen” like they’re at a bar – so you can tell who’s pious by how they’re singing. I’m a defender of robust Pascha joy, but some folks take it just a bit far, as I was reminded this morning upon reading that the annual Greek Pascha fireworks celebration, wherein the churches on the island of Chios launch rockets at each other. From BBC online:
The inhabitants of the small Greek island of Chios have stage their traditional “Rocket War”.
In a bizarre but long-cherished local tradition to celebrate the Orthodox Easter holiday, two churches in the town of Vrodandos fire rockets at each other’s churches – while services are held.
I heard someone at church say something about Greeks firing rockets at each other, but this isn’t really what came to mind.
